Rooi-Els is a secluded seaside village situated on the eastern shore of False Bay, approximately 70 kilometres from Cape Town. It is the first of the four coastal "hangklip" villages along the scenic R44 (Clarence Drive). Established as a township in the 1940s, the village is named after the Red Alder tree (Cunonia capensis) found in the nearby river valleys.

The town is unique for its status as a registered conservancy within the UNESCO-recognized Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. Residents are committed to minimal environmental impact; the village famously has no streetlights and many of its roads remain narrow and untarred to preserve the natural character and allow local wildlife—including baboons and small antelope—to roam freely.
