The Industrial Titan of the Highveld

Secunda is a unique, high-energy industrial city situated on the Mpumalanga Highveld, roughly 130 kilometres east of Johannesburg. While many towns grow organically over centuries, Secunda was "born" in 1974, specifically designed by Sasol to house the massive workforce required for the Sasol II and Sasol III plants. Its name, which is Latin for "second," acknowledges its status as the company’s second major petroleum-from-coal extraction site after Sasolburg.

Despite its heavy industrial roots, Secunda was laid out as a "garden city," featuring significant green belts that weave through its residential sectors. The town is defined by a striking skyline, dominated by the 301-metre-high chimney at the Sasol Three steam plant—one of the tallest free-standing structures in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Economy: Petrochemicals, Mining, and the 2026 Energy Shift

Secunda remains an indispensable pillar of the South African economy, moving beyond traditional fuel production into the cutting edge of renewable energy technology.

Key economic pillars include:

• The Sasol Synfuels Complex: This remains the world's only commercial-scale coal-to-liquids (CTL) facility. It provides approximately 30% of South Africa's liquid fuel and a vast array of chemicals used globally.

• The 2026 Green Hydrogen Training Hub: In April 2026, Secunda solidified its future-ready status with the launch of an industry-integrated Green Hydrogen Fuel Cell Training System. This initiative, a partnership between Sasol and CHIETA, is designed to upskill the local workforce for the global transition to sustainable energy.

• The Petrochemical & Energy Roadshow: Secunda is the permanent home of the annual Petrochemical Roadshow, with the June 2026 event at Graceland focusing on green hydrogen feasibility and downstream chemical innovation.

• Coal Mining Operations: The town is the center of a massive mining cluster, including the Bosjesspruit and Twistdraai collieries, which use advanced conveyor networks to feed the gasification plants directly.

Landmarks and Lifestyle

Secunda effectively balances its industrial silhouette with upscale leisure and natural retreats.

• Lake Umuzi Waterfront: The town’s social heartbeat, featuring the AquaZone Waterpark, diverse restaurants, and artisanal markets. It is the premier destination for both locals and visitors.

• Graceland Hotel, Casino and Country Club: An American "Deep South" themed resort that hosts a Gary Player-designed 18-hole championship golf course and world-class entertainment facilities.

• The Sasol Chimneys: While functional, these 301-metre towers are iconic landmarks visible for miles across the flat Highveld plains.

• Eende Dam: A serene local nature spot popular for photography, birdwatching, and community parkruns.

Infrastructure and 2026 Developments

Secunda’s infrastructure is highly specialized, built to handle massive industrial logistics while supporting a growing middle-class population.

• Strategic Road Network: The town is bisected by the N17 highway, a vital corridor linking Johannesburg to Eswatini (Swaziland). The R546 and R580 provide essential links to the nearby mining nodes.

• 2026 Municipal Resilience: Following heavy seasonal rains in early 2026, the Govan Mbeki Municipality has prioritized a R5-million Disaster Fund specifically for infrastructure repair and flood mitigation within the Secunda and eMbalenhle regions.

• Industrial Rail and Pipe Logistics: A sophisticated network of rail sidings and pipelines connects Secunda to the national grid and the port of Durban, facilitating the bulk export of chemicals and fuels.

• Technical Education: Secunda hosts the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Highveld campus, which plays a critical role in producing the specialized engineers and technicians required for the 2026 energy transition.
