What’s your name and designation?
My name is Muki, and I’m the founder & owner at Muki Venture Hiking Tours.
Tell us about your journey. How did you get started with your business, and what inspired you to do so?
Muki Venture Hiking Tours officially started in 2016 after I completed my mountain guiding training and accreditation through Venture Forth Academy.
Before becoming a hiking guide, I worked as a computer programmer, but I was always a nature lover at heart. My love for the outdoors, mountains, people, and conservation was much deeper than my connection to computers. I wanted to build a business that allowed me to work in nature while helping others experience Cape Town’s mountains safely and meaningfully.
From the beginning, Muki Venture Hiking Tours was built as an ecotourism-focused business, with respect for nature, responsible travel, safety, and authentic local guiding at its core. For the first three years, I worked alone and worked very hard to build trust in the industry. Slowly, hotels and tourism businesses started trusting my services.
As the business grew, I expanded by bringing in 10 local freelance guides to join me. Today, Muki Venture Hiking Tours offers private eco-friendly guided hikes on Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, Kirstenbosch and other Cape Town trails, helping guests connect with nature while respecting and protecting the environment.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges was building trust and visibility in a competitive tourism industry. In the beginning, I worked alone and had to prove myself through reliability, safety, professionalism and consistent service.
Another challenge was helping people understand that Muki Venture Hiking Tours was not just another hiking service, but an ecotourism-focused experience built around nature, responsible travel and personal guiding.
I overcame these challenges by staying consistent, improving my service, building relationships with hotels and tourism partners, and focusing strongly on guest safety, local knowledge and memorable experiences.
What unique aspects of doing business in South Africa would you highlight (good or bad)?
South Africa offers incredible opportunities, especially in tourism. We have mountains, oceans, wildlife, culture, history and warm people all in one country. Cape Town is especially powerful because nature is so close to the city.
The challenge is that small businesses must work very hard to be seen and trusted. Tourism can be seasonal, and competition is strong. But South Africans are resilient and creative.
For Muki Venture Hiking Tours, South Africa’s uniqueness is our strength. Guests come for the views, but they remember the people, the stories, the nature and the feeling of being in a truly special place.
How do you differentiate your business from competitors?
Muki Venture Hiking Tours focuses on private eco-friendly guided hikes, not large group tours. This allows each hike to move at the guest’s pace, with more attention to safety, comfort, photography stops and personal interaction.
We also place strong focus on ecotourism. We encourage respect for nature, responsible trail use, and appreciation for Cape Town’s unique mountain environment.
What makes us different is the combination of qualified guiding, local knowledge, safety, personal care and a deep love for nature.
What strategies have you found to be most effective in growing your customer base?
The most effective strategy has been building trust through good service, guest reviews, strong partnerships and online visibility.
Hotels and tourism businesses started recommending us because they trusted our professionalism and safety. At the same time, our website, SEO, Google Business Profile, social media and route information helped more travellers find us online.
Authentic photos, videos and guest experiences have also helped people understand what we offer before they book.
What’s one mistake you made early on that you wish you could go back and fix?
One mistake was not focusing on digital visibility early enough. In the beginning, I focused mainly on delivering the best possible hiking experience, but I later realised that people also need to find you, understand you and trust you online.
If I could go back, I would have started earlier with SEO, professional website content, reviews, route pages and consistent social media.
The lesson is that a great service must also be easy to discover and easy to book.
What’s the most rewarding part of being a business owner?
The most rewarding part is seeing guests finish a hike feeling happy, confident and connected to nature.
Some guests arrive nervous or unsure of their fitness, but by the end they are smiling, taking photos and feeling proud of what they achieved.
It is also rewarding to build a business that reflects my values: nature, safety, ecotourism, local knowledge and responsible travel.
How do you approach innovation and staying relevant in your industry?
We stay relevant by listening to what modern travellers want. Many guests are looking for private, safe, authentic and eco-friendly experiences, so we continue to shape our hikes around those needs.
We also improve our digital presence through better website content, route FAQs, SEO, social media, Google updates and clearer booking information.
For us, innovation is not only about technology. It is about improving the guest experience while staying true to nature, safety and responsible tourism.
How has your business adapted to the digital age, and what advice would you give to others looking to do the same?
Muki Venture Hiking Tours has adapted by becoming more visible online through our website, Google Business Profile, SEO content, social media, guest reviews and helpful route information.
Today, many guests decide whether to trust a business before they even make contact. That means your online presence must be clear, professional and authentic.
My advice is to start simple but be consistent. Share your real story, real photos, real reviews and clear information. Digital tools are powerful, but authenticity is what makes people connect.
What advice do you have for someone just starting a business in South Africa?
Start with a clear purpose and be prepared to work hard. South Africa has many opportunities, but it also requires patience, resilience and creativity.
Do not wait for everything to be perfect. Start with what you have, improve as you go, and listen carefully to your customers.
Build trust, be reliable, and take your online presence seriously from the beginning. Most importantly, know what makes your business unique and build proudly around that.
